Last Saturday Jim and I had our first official date night since Riesling was born. That's right we pretty much haven't been anywhere except work without our little sweet pea in almost a year. I guess we did go to my best friend's wedding in Charleston when she was about 7 weeks old but I don't really count that since we were within walking distance of our hotel and my "nanny" for the evening brought her to the wedding for feedings. Anyways, we booked our sitter, got all fancied up and off we went to celebrate Jim's birthday like real adults.
We started the evening dining amongst the 65 and older crowd with a 5:30 reservation at the Yardley Inn (one of our favorite restaurants) accompanied by our dear friends, The Crookers. I must say early dining has it's advantages. It wasn't too crowded, it was early in the shift so the servers were fresh on their game, and we scored a major three course early dining special. It was definitely a little weird to be without Riesling. While we were waiting for The Crookers to arrive the table behind us had a 5 minute discussion about which bottle of Riesling was the best....it was like torture to listen to our little gals name over and over again while trying to ward off the guilt of leaving her behind for the night. When Jon & Lorraine arrived and the adult conversation started to flow, we got over our mild case of guilt pretty quickly. I honestly didn't know what to do with both my hands free. We even enjoyed a round of oysters (well none for the shellfish allergy stricken gal) and a three course dinner without interruption. I had to keep reminding myself that it was Ok to eat slowly.
Following dinner we headed over to the new brewery in Yardley, The Vault. Jim has recently taken an interest in brewing beer and it was a desired trip to The Vault that actually prompted us to get a babysitter in the first place. The men enjoyed some fine brews on tap while ladies aka designated drivers chatted over chilled water. Good times were had by all. By 9:30ish we were holding hands and walking through a sparkly dusting of fresh snow. So romantic.
We arrive back home only to find our darling Miss Riesling has decided to awaken from her slumber just minutes if not seconds earlier. Not only is she not sleeping she is apparently wide awake and ready for a night of partying. Our sitter apologizes, takes her cash, and sleeps out the door while I attempt to rock her. After nearly 2 hours of rocking, singing, nursing, reading, snuggling, and every other trick in the book (that's right, very close to midnight) she was back asleep. Jim has been snoring in a bit of a drunken stupor for well over an hour at this point and I exhausted and lying on the floor of Riesling's nursery holding her hand through the crib comforting her to sleep. Man I love date night. Stupid wasted oyster.

A little catching up
Last year it was snow, this year a hurricane. I'm seriously considering changing my birthday! We got most of the celebrating in before hand so by the time Monday rolled around it didn't really feel like my birthday anyways.

Riesling and I went to work while Daddy did some birthday shopping and errands. In the afternoon I made a quick run to the grocery store for a few Hurricane Sandy supplies then we walked down to our local Harvest Day, where we picked up some fresh local grown beets, goat cheese from another local-ish farm, and a homemade treat for Sofee dog.
Per my request we all got cleaned up and fancy for an earlier dinner reservation at the Blue Sage. It's a wonderful vegetarian restaurant but the food is so diverse and creative even a non vegetarian doesn't miss the meat. Dining with Riesling is an interesting adventure but she always does better than I expect. We tried really hard to get a family picture but non of them came out very good. But I do love this one of Riesling and her Da-Da

The Robinson crewed joined us for a little lunch and birthday cake. I made a batch of roasted acorn squash soup, put it in the crockpot and made a little tray of cheese (including our goat cheese purchase) & crackers and called it a day. Jim is always in charge of my birthday cake (no matter how many woman family members offer to get him out of it) and he made a delicious gluten free pumpkin spice cake with homemade pumpkin cream cheese frosting and candy corn. Since it's the one time of year he does any baking, he likes me to stay close by the kitchen in case he has any questions but would definitely be fine without me.

Jim was off work because of the approaching Hurricane, so it was a little bit of a bonus to spend my actual birthday as a family. We spent the morning and early afternoon prepping the house for the heavy winds & using as much electricity as possible. I got all the laundry and dishes done and tried to cook up stuff that was in the fridge and forced us to eat leftovers for lunch. The day ended with no power and scary hurricane wind & rain.
We ended up being without power until last night. Five days without electricity is a wee bit inconvenient with a little babe but I can't even think about complaining. I know that Sandy destroyed and damaged a lot of homes and there are still so many people suffering through the devastation. Our house is completely unharmed even though 4 huge pine trees were uprooted from the property behind our house into the only empty field in the neighborhood. Friends, family, and neighbors were all so generous. I was particularly warmed by the support of our neighbors. Part of the neighborhood got their electricity back within 24hrs and without a second thought they opened up their homes for us to shower and stay overnight when the temperatures dropped; prepared meals and invited us and other families in for coffee or a hot dinner; set up generators for families with elderly or small children; and one guy even ran multiple extension cords across the street so we could plug in our fridge. I love knowing that we are raising a family amongst people that care.

Weekend
Saturday night we skipped over to the to the other side of Philly to meet up with friends for a production of Mark Twain's, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer at Peoples Light and Theatre.
The theatre is housed in a restored 18th century farmhouse surrounded by seven acres. I really do enjoy live productions and the old farmhouse setting added to the charm of the evening. The temperatures were warm enough to wait outdoors before the productions and attempt a few extended arm self portraits...
Last night we ended a day of work with popcorn and Fargo. Have you seen it? It's a Coen brothers film from the 90's and surprisingly neither Jim or I had seen. It's a crazy story line, which we were lead to believe it truth, but really isn't. Regardless, I really liked it and recommend watching it if you haven't already. It's free on NetFlix.
The accents really cracked me up. I've been pining for an accent of my own recently. There are a lot of lame accents out there that I'm happy to be without (i.e. North Dakota...which is apparently worse than being a damn Canadian), but just think how super cool it would be to rock out a sweet Russian accent...a girl can dream.

Welcome Twenty Eleven
After a lazy New Year's Eve, Jim and spent the first day of 2011 enjoying an unusual break in the weather.

We spent the morning walking with Sofee dog at a really nice park near our house. Sofee had a grand 'ole time running, playing frisbee, and attempting to eat every pile of duck poop in site.
Then give me sweet Sofee dog kisses.
Dog lovers & owners, you understand.
Everyone else, don't judge me.
Or just do so quietly so I can't hear.
Jim aka Mr. Nature played around with the new camera and decided we needed to invest in a super zoom lense so we can get better bird and animal photos.
It's actually weird that there are birds at this park at all because there are about 500 cats lurking around in the brush, getting busy and mass producing future generations of wild felines who will eventually evolve into crazy, man eating predators.
It's seriously a problem.
Some strange cat people actually set up these little cat villages in the middle of thorn bushes.
I was a little nervous taking pictures.
Doesn't that big Papa cat look like he's ready to pounce on me and scratch my eyes out?
After surviving passage thru cat village, we ventured into the city to the Cleopatra exhibit at the Franklin institute. It was a great afternoon and evening for the city, even though the exhibit was a bit disappointing. We had discounted passes thru Groupon, so we only paid $8, but I would've actually been very disappointed and hungry if we'd paid full price ($30).
We used our savings to enjoy an early dinner and drinks at the Belgian Cafe, which not only had over 200 beer choices but 2 were gluten free!
Cleopatra exhibit. Not recommend.
But it doesn't matter because last weekend was the final showing.

Weekend Rewind
We had a really fun, action packed weekend. Although I don't have one single picture of any of the happenings. Friday night we had front rows seats for a boxing match at The Blue Horizon. great time! Two knock outs, one ridiculously mismatched fight between some Hispanic version of the Pilsbury Doughboy and an intense end to the evening with a heated ten rounds in Derek "Pooh" Ennis vs. Jose Gonzalez. I really know nothing about boxing, but it was a great fight.
Saturday we spent the day enjoying the great weather, then off to Mikado for hibachi. great time! It was my first habachi experience and I know have the strong urge to add a huge griddle to our new kitchen. I was undecided about whether to just get chicken or chicken & steak. Go for the steak!! It was sooo delicious.
Sunday was spent with the in-laws and the extended Robinson family. great time! (ok it great is probably a bit of an exaggeration in describing Easter dinner, but we did have a nice afternoon.) I made this sweet potato souffle for the first time, and it turned out to be a big hit.
The rest of April is going to be be pretty jammed packed! Friday I'm off on a 5AM flight to spend a long weekend in Charlotte. One last dose of relaxation and girly fun before the house buying, moving, wallpaper removing chaos begins. Followed by a weekend of packing (ugh!), and by the weekend following we'll be homeowners.

Local favorite
Nothing rewards surviving a stressful week like a trip to "The Pub." Blue Moon, Fayette chicken sandwich, and onion rings. YUM!!! I'm also planning to treat myself to a pedicure after work today....yes it was a VERY stressful week!
